So you read that VLC is getting AI subtitles, opened the app to try it - and there's nothing there. You didn't miss a setting. The feature is real and officially announced for VLC 4.0, but it is not in the stable desktop release. Here's the honest status, what it will and won't do when it lands, and how to watch a movie in your language tonight if you'd rather not wait.
Short answer: not in stable VLC. On 2026-08-13, VideoLAN's release list still shows 3.0.23; its AI subtitle feature is described as upcoming in VLC 4.0.
The VideoLAN team showed the feature at CES 2025 and says generation and translation will be part of VLC 4.0. The official releases page still lists VLC 3.0.23. Experimental VLC 4.0 nightly builds are available, but VideoLAN labels them unstable and unsupported; they are not the normal stable download.
